Mental Resilience: How to Stay Motivated in Challenging Times

Life happens. That’s a sentence many of us have found ourselves using, and it’s obvious why. This is because life is unpredictable; no matter how much you plan, anything can happen. One minute, it seems like everything is going great, and then, unexpectedly, setbacks and challenges can set you back.

The drain and downright hazards put on you by everyday life can make you lose your motivation and feel like giving up. But how do you keep going and striving in such tough times? We can find our answer in mental resilience—the ability to come back after being knocked down by setbacks, change direction, and not give up until you have succeeded.

How to Develop Resilience and Keep Yourself Motivated

  1. Prepare for the Adversity That Comes in Life  

First off, you need to understand that there will always be hard times. The reality is that everyone struggles, even if they are successful and happy. It is not to forge a path, never to wrangle these struggles, but to recognise that you will overcome. Rather than telling yourself, “What is this that is happening to me?” switch your thinking to, “What can I learn from this?” (Kumar & Rajamohan, 2008)

  1. Set Small, Achievable Goals  

Big goals feel like a mountain to climb when motivation is low. One step at a time rather than focusing on the hill ahead. Set small but achievable goals that make you feel accomplished. Taking off some check marks, no matter how small the to-do, can provide momentum and a sense of control. (Julian, et. Al., 2024)

  1. Reframe Negative Thoughts  

How you do it is covered by your mindset. If you catch yourself contemplating that you will never be able to get through this, then challenge yourself instead and affirm a good idea. For example, remind yourself that although this is hard, you’ve met troubles before and succeeded — you will get through this, too. (Kuehn, et.al, 2024)

Imagine you have a thought when you see yourself. And when you face yourself, it is the speech that talks to you.

  1. Build a Support System  

You can’t do it all by yourself. Ask a colleague, your spouse, a friend, or even a mentor for their ideas when you are struggling.

“Sometimes, just talking it out with someone who gets it helps you shift the needle.” Choose to be with those who uplift you, not those who zap your energy. (Prayekti, et.al. 2025)

  1. Look After Your Body and Mind  

Let’s be honest — when you are tired, eating garbage, and not moving your body, you can’t stay motivated. Feel free to rest, eat good food, and move a bit. Even a walk will work wonders for your mind, helping you get back to the headspace for stress management and emotional resilience. (Sias, et.al. 2024)

  1. Honor Progress, Not Just Perfection

It’s extremely common to get stuck in the “I have to have all the answers” mindset. But some progress is better than none, even baby progress. Pause to celebrate your victories — whether that’s checking a task off the list, learning something, or just getting through a rough day. (Prayekti, et.al. 2025)

  1. Find Your “Why”  

Determine the reason why you strive to live every day to help you cope with life’s challenges and build resilience. Remind yourself what made you start when times get tough. What’s driving you? Whether you’re working toward one goal for yourself, doing something for your family, or trying a dream you will not abandon, keep reminding yourself why you’re doing it. This can ignite your motivation when nothing seems possible. (de Vries, 2024)

Resilience is the ability to recover after a knockdown. Mental resilience isn’t being unbreakable; it is learning to bend instead of break. Motivation will come and go, but if you can build habits that strengthen your mindset, you will power through the bad days. Just take it day by day—you’ve got this!
